On 12–13 June 2025, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) hosted a Task Force meeting to support the implementation of Article 44 of the EU Directive 2024/1385 on combating violence against women and domestic violence.
The Directive represents the first comprehensive EU-wide legal framework addressing violence against women, including cyber-violence, and aims to strengthen victim support, harmonise the criminalisation of specific acts, and reinforce preventive measures. To enable proper monitoring of its implementation, Article 44 establishes clear obligations for Member States to systematically collect administrative data on gender-based violence (GBV).
The key objectives of the meeting were to:
- Present and discuss EIGE’s ongoing work in GBV data collection
- Introduce the administrative data requirements outlined in Article 44
- Outline and agree on the roadmap and framework for implementation
- Identify Member States’ needs for technical support, methodology, and capacity building
- Define the Task Force’s operational mandate and working methods
- Promote cooperation and ensure alignment with EU and international partners, including the ENVR
Since 2010, EIGE has played a leading role in enhancing understanding of violence against women across the EU. Through data collection and analysis, EIGE helps strengthen national statistical systems and supports Member States in closing data gaps and improving disaggregated data.
The meeting marked an important step toward building a harmonised, reliable and comparable data collection system on gender-based violence in the EU, enabling evidence-based policymaking and improved services for victims.
We look forward to continuing the cooperation with the institute and contributing to the implementation of this important European instrument.
